For too long on this campus, UA Dining Services run by Aramark have only worked in the interest of their bank account and not the students on the University of Akron campus. They are a company that serves both prisons and universities, but can't seem to differentiate between the two. If you are a student with a dietary restriction, by choice or not, or someone who suffers from allergies, Aramark has failed to provide students with the necessary nutrition for their health and well-being. Also, it is important to note that while UA is working to move away from being deemed a "commuter school," Aramark is single-handedly perpetuating that stereotype by closing almost all of their food locations on Friday-Sunday. Students don't stop eating when class is not in session. Lastly, Aramark has lowered dining plans, giving fewer dining dollars and swipes for a more expensive price. Some people receive a meal plan as a form of payment and Aramark is making it where they earn less per hour now than the prisoners they claim to serve. Furthermore, representatives from Aramark have admitted in public meetings that they are not here to serve the students. It is hard for me to believe that the UA Administration cannot find at least one clause in the contract that dining services has broken. Many universities, as well as states are starting to move away from Aramark due to their human rights abuses in prisons. There are many more issues, but we must keep it brief so they know we are serious. Sign this petition and urge the UA Administration to leave their contract with Aramark or force Aramark to start working on behalf of the student. We are students and our voices are important too!
