We are deeply concerned by the recent reports confirming that Grumman Aerospace used radioactive materials for testing and development purposes in our community, thereby contradicting previous assertions by Grumman to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). This new revelation underscores the urgent need for all levels of government to work together to immediately address the toxic soil contamination and remediate the Grumman-Navy plume impacting our local communities.
Together, we continue to fight to keep the Bethpage community protected and to secure the funds needed to fully remediate this problem so local taxpayers do not foot the bill. In accordance with The Clean Water Infrastructure Act, we continue to urge Governor Cuomo and the DEC to immediately build the infrastructure required to remediate the Grumman-Navy plume. In partnership with the DEC, the Town is requiring that Grumman and the Navy test for “1, 4-Dioxane,” as well as radium and its breakdown products to, whatever extent they are found in the plume.
Immediate cleanup of the Grumman-Navy plume and complete remediation of contaminated soils must be the top priority for our Federal, State and local governments. We also will compel the polluters to be held accountable both in their remediation efforts and in completely financing the costs for the cleanup to ensure that our community does not shoulder the financial burden associated with this process.
