In the coming weeks of May, the House of Representatives is voting on the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act. The Senate already voted on the bill in late April, where it passed through with an overwhelming bipartisan vote. The bill addresses the recent increase in racial discrimination and violence towards Asian Americans across the United States, which has increased by upwards of 150% in 16 cities in the past year (CSUSB Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism).

This petition serves to encourage Colorado House Representatives Joe Neguse and Ed Perlmutter to vote in favor of the bill. Joe Neguse, a Democrat, represents Colorado’s District 2. Ed Perlmutter, also a Democrat, represents Colorado’s District 7. We’ve chosen to write to Joe Neguse and Ed Perlmutter because we believe the majority of our audience for this petition resides in their districts. We will send this petition to Neguse and Perlmutter on May 14th. We hope by then the petition will have enough signatures to show our representatives that their voters want them to vote in favor of the bill.

We strongly recommend you read over the bill yourself before signing the petition, here’s the link:

These are the main points of the bill:

  • Assignment of specific DOJ (Department of Justice) members to oversee increased timeliness in hate crimes reporting and review
  • DOJ guidance for state and local governments on how to administer online hate crime reporting, data collection, and education on discrimination against Asian Americans
  • Grants for governments to implement hotlines and the National Incident-Based -Reporting System as well as training for first responders on crime prevention and response to hate crimes
  • Allow for courts to mandate those convicted of hate crimes to attend educational or community serviced-based opportunities

A note from the organizers of this petition:

Hi, we are Trenton Marbois and Mackenzie Kurtz, Colorado State University students. We were inspired to take on this endeavor by our Writing Arguments course. We both feel passionate about advocating for equality and justice for minorities in America. This past year has brought a lot of hate and bias towards Asian Americans to the surface, and we want to do something about it. We hope that you, like us, feel a responsibility to use your voice to advocate for positive change in our country. Please feel free to share this petition. Thank you!
