I'm 16 years old and a junior in high school. I am a gay boy who is in the closet to his parents for his safety. My parents are Biden supporters; they have supported democratic government candidates for as long as I can remember. They have fairly liberal views until it comes down to LGBT people and the depreciation of traditional gender roles. I've always been scared to come out to my parents and my fear has gotten worse lately. Recently, my mother told me that she would disown me if I expressed myself in a way that could be labeled as "gay" or if I was gay at all. She said that she's concerned for my safety when I grow up and she doesn't want people to bully me, but it seems that she’s the “bully” in this situation. I think I speak for every minority who has been threatened to be disowned or disowned completely just because of their self-expression when I say that life becomes scarier once your parents try to silence you in such an extreme way.

Why I'm here writing this petition crying in bed is because I want to make sure that members of my community can feel safe. Joe Biden, if you are reading this, I want parents like mine to make their children feel safe. I want America to learn to accept everyone no matter their self-expression, sexual orientation, gender, or race. I want a message of positivity around minorities to be spread and uplifted in schools and communities like Boy Scouts.

We could start with a law to prevent parents from disowning their children because of their identity. This could also include outlawing other extreme discriminatory acts made by people outside of families. People should get the chance to choose how they want to live, including teenagers like me.

If you read this whole description, thank you for taking the time to hear my story and why I want equality for all.
