(See Article 35 of the NLCA) The Inuit should be able to find work and affordable housing in their own land. We, the undersigned, want companies who operate in Nunavut and profit there to train and employ more Inuit people, and to make them eligible for subsidized staff housing, the same way that imported southerners already are. We want an end to discriminatory hiring practices that privilege southern workers over local people. We want the spirit of Articles 23 and 24 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement to be respected, ensuring that beneficiaries of the Agreement are trained and hired for jobs in proportion to their percentage of the population. ————————————————————————— ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥ, ᐃᒡᓗᑦ ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᓂᕿᑦ ᐊᑭᑐᔪᑦ ᑕᒪᓐᓇ ᑐᑭᖃᓐᖏᑦᑎᐊᖅᑐᖅ. ᐊᑕᐅᓯᕐᒥᒃ ᐃᒡᓗᕈᓯᓕᒃ ᐃᖃᓗᖕᓂ ᐊᑭᖃᖅᑐᖅ $2,500 ᑕᕿᒧᑦ ᐊᒻᒪᓗ $1,200 ᐆᒪᖁᑎᓄᑦ ᐃᒪᕐᓄᓪᓗ ᐃᒡᓗᒧᑦ ᐊᑕᔪᑦ, ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᐃᓚᒌᑦ ᓂᕿᒃᓴᒥᖕᓄᑦ ᐊᑭᓖᖃᑦᑕᖅᑐᑦ ᐅᖓᑖ $700 ᐱᓇᓱᐊᕈᓯᖅ. ᐃᖅᑲᓇᐃᔮᒃᓴᐃᑦ ᐊᑐᐃᓐᓇᐅᖃᑦᑕᓐᖏᑦᑐᑦ ᐃᓄᖕᓄᑦ, ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᐅᓇ ᐱᐅᔪᓐᓃᖅᐸᓪᓕᐊᑐᐃᓐᓇᖅᑐᖅ, ᐱᐅᓯᕙᓪᓕᐊᓐᖏᑦᑐᖅ. ᑕᐃᒪᓐᓇᐅᓕᖓᓂᓄ ᐊᒥᓱᒻᒪᕆᐋᓗᐃᑦ ᐃᒡᓗᖃᓐᖏᑦᑐᑦ ᐊᖕᖏᕋᖃᓐᖏᑦᑐᑦ, ᓴᐱᖅᓇᖅᑐᖅ ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᑳᖃᑦᑕᖅᑐᑦ ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥ ᓄᓇᑖᕈᑎᑦᓄᑦ ᐱᔪᓐᓇᐅᑎᖃᖅᑐᓄᑦ. ᐊᒥᓱᒻᒪᕆᐋᓗᐃᑦ ᐊᐅᓪᓚᖃᑦᑕᓕᖅᑐᑦ ᖃᓪᓗᓈᑦ ᓄᓇᖓᓄᑦ, ᐱᔾᔪᑎᒋᓪᓗᒍ ᐊᑭᓕᖅᓱᐃᔪᓐᓇᓐᖏᓇᒥᒃ ᐃᓅᔭᕆᐊᒃᓴᖅ ᓇᖕᒥᓂᖅ ᓄᓇᒥᖕᓂ. ᑕᐃᒪᓐᓇᐅᑎᓪᓗᒍ ᒫᓐᓇ, ᖃᓪᓗᓛᓂ ᓄᓇᖃᖅᑐᑦ ᓄᒃᑎᖅᑕᐅᓪᓗᑎᒃ ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒧᖅ ᐃᖃᓇᐃᔭᕐᓂᐊᕐᒪᑕ ᐅᑯᐊᓗ ᐊᑑᑎᔪᑦ ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥᒃ ᓄᓇᑖᕈᑎᑦ ᐊᖕᖏᕈᑎᖏᓐᓂᒃ ᐱᔪᓐᓇᐅᑎᓕᖕᓄᑦ, ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᐅᑯᐊ ᖃᓪᓗᓈᑦ ᓄᓇᖓᓂᑦ ᐊᔪᖏᑦᑐᑦ ᐊᑭᒡᖠᒋᐊᖅᓯᒪᓪᓗᑎᒃ ᐃᒡᓗᒥᖕᓄᑦ ᐊᑭᓕᖅᓲᑎᒋᔭᑎᒃ. ᑕᒪᒃᑯᓇᖓᑦ ᑐᔪᕐᒥᕕᖕᒥᒃ ᓴᓗᒻᒪᖅᓴᐃᔨᑦ ᑕᒪᒃᑯᓄᖓ ᒐᕙᒪᒃᑯ ᐃᖅᑲᓇᐃᔮᒃᓴᐃᑦ, ᕿᓂᖅᑐᒍᑦ ᐅᑯᐊ ᑎᑭᑎᑕᐅᖃᑦᑕᖅᑐᑦ ᐃᖅᑲᓇᐃᔭᕐᑎᑦ ᓯᕗᓪᓕᖅᐸᑎᑕᐅᖃᑦᑕᕐᒪᑕ ᐱᔭᐅᖄᖅᖢᑎᒃ. ᐅᓇ ᓄᖃᕆᐊᖃᖅᑐ. ᒫᓐᓇ ᐊᑏ ᓄᓇᕗᒻᒥᒃ ᓄᓇᑖᕈᑎᑦ ᐊᖕᖏᕈᑎᖏᓐᓂᑦ ᐱᔪᓐᓇᐅᑎᖃᖅᑐᑦ - ᐃᓄᐃᑦ - ᓴᓇᓗᑎᒃ ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᓄᓇᖃᖅᓗᑎᒃ ᓇᖕᒥᓂᖅ ᓄᓇᖁᑎᒥᖕᓂ. In Nunavut, housing and food are so expensive it’s an outrage. A one-bedroom apartment in Iqaluit costs about $2500 a month plus $1200 monthly for utilities, and a family grocery bill can easily be over $700 a week. Jobs aren’t often made available to Inuit, and this trend is getting worse, not better. This has resulted in so much homelessness, hopelessness and poverty for NLCA beneficiaries. So many are forced to scatter to the south, because they can no longer afford to live in their own land. Meanwhile, southerners are being imported to Nunavut to fill job postings that could easily be made available to NLCA beneficiaries, and these southerners are eligible for subsidized staff housing. Name any job, from hotel room cleaner to cab driver to government worker, we are seeing imported workers take priority. This has to stop. It’s time to let NLCA beneficiaries - the Inuit - work and live with dignity in their own land. ------------------------------------------------------------ A paper version of this petition has already gathered 1000 signatures in Iqaluit, and is now online ready for more.
