Keep Your Promise - Return Land on Onondaga Lake to the Onondaga Nation

In 2011, at the urging of local residents, the Onondaga County Legislature passed a resolution stating their intention to return a parcel of land on Onondaga Lake to the Onondaga Nation. It is a gesture of healing that many support.
They plan to vote on the resolution on May 3.
We, the undersigned, support the 2011 resolution by the Onondaga County Legislature that resolved to return a cleaned parcel of land on Onondaga Lake to the Onondaga Nation. It is vitally important for the healing of our community that we keep our word, recognizing that Onondaga Lake is sacred to the Onondaga Nation and the Haudenosaunee. The Peacemaker founded their Confederacy on the shores of the lake over 1000 years ago. In no way should the 2011 resolution be revoked, repealed, or otherwise circumvented.
Onondaga Lake is within the territory acknowledged to be Onondaga Nation territory, under the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua.
As Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation, we feel that giving some portion of land back on Onondaga Lake for the free use and enjoyment of the Onondaga Nation is the least we can do, and important to the healing of relationship with our neighbors. To have Onondaga County, our government, go back on its word to the Onondaga Nation brings shame on us all.
No one said that giving land back would be easy. But this is why it is particularly good. The land must be first cleaned of pollution - but so should all lands around Onondaga Lake.
We want Onondaga County to keep its word and give land back to the Onondaga Nation.
