Excuse AA Students from Writing and Presenting Junior Speeches

At the beginning of the Personal Mission and Leadership course, Craig Case asked his students if they'd want to do junior speeches. The response he received unanimously decided that the junior student body would not be doing speeches. It was never discussed again; as a matter of fact, throughout the whole course and its syllabus, junior speeches, testimonial speeches, or things of the like are never mentioned.

Suddenly, these speeches have become mandatory, and are set to be completed over J-Term. Not only does this go against the original plan, but these speeches are interrupting the break that AA students all worked so hard for. While it was widely understood that taking college courses wouldn't be easy, everyone was up for the challenge. They put their blood, sweat, tears, sleepless nights, and burnouts into the coursework while in the middle of a pandemic because they knew that in the end, the break would be worth it all. Many of the people in the AA program were also working over Christmas break. Students planned schedules around J-Term breaks and study halls for varying reasons, and now, everything they worked towards is being taken away.

Additionally, these speeches are just busywork. Once again, J-Term was understood to be a break for students to relax. These speeches were supposed to be discussed well over a month ago, but since they weren't, students have to fit months worth of work into a short break period. This adds unnecessary stress to a time that should be peaceful and relaxing. Just because students have free time does NOT mean that it needs to be filled. As a school, Maranatha Christian Academy stresses the importance of taking breaks for mental health. It is vitally important that they uphold this standard, and pardon their junior AA Students from writing and presenting these speeches.
