Please help make journeys home safe in Cardiff!

Taxis refusing short fares at night at central ranks is common practice. Despite numerous complaints to the council and taxi companies over the last 4 years, people are still unable to get a taxi home at the end of the night.

This is not only a failure by taxis to provide the service they are there for, but leads to people walking home, leaving men, but especially women, vulnerable to attack. From personal experience and the reports of others, we know that regardless of whether you are a woman on your own the taxis will not take you if your fare is local.

In 2015 there were 3 assaults on young women in 5 days in Cardiff centre, which led to outcry by the student community and the annual 'reclaim the night' campaign to end violence and abuse against women. Last year, May 20th, 2017, a girl was raped just after midnight walking home from the town centre. More recently, there has been over 100 university reports of abuse in Cardiff since October 2017. As a professional young woman in Cardiff, I can say this is not just a student community problem.

Is this not enough? With this petition we are asking Cardiff Council to bring back the marshalling service at the Cardiff Castle rank at night and enforce the Taxi Driver Code of practice. Please sign and help prevent more incidents happening to women in Cardiff.
