Re-Open Jim Durrell Recreation Centre
This petition had 125 supporters
Many residents of the Alta Vista, Capital, Gloucester-Southgate, and River Wards visit the Jim Durrell Recreation Centre to keep their families active and healthy. The two pad arena facility is a vital part of the community, providing access to many programs that residents enjoy.
On May 2, 2020, the Jim Durrell Recreation Centre was closed and converted to a temporary self-isolation centre and emergency shelter for homeless men due to COVID-19. Residents of the wards who use this facility were not consulted, but everyone can understand the challenges at that time, and the facility was closed to the public anyways.
When Ottawa arenas re-open, the residents of the community would like the use of their facility back and ask that the temporary self-isolation centre and emergency shelter for homeless men be moved to another location.
Supporters of this petition are not against the temporary men's homeless shelter or initiatives to help the homeless. This is a case of a facility being restored to its intended use. Supporters of this petition encourage and support city officials to come up with long-term solutions toward large issues like homelessness in Ottawa.
