Community Rowing, Inc started this petition to Jim Montgomery, Interim Commissioner, Department of Conservation and Recreation

Dear Commissioner Montgomery,

We want the streets bordering the Charles River Reservation to be safe for all people, whether they are walking, bicycling, taking transit or driving. We are writing to request that a traffic light be installed at the entrance to the parking lot on Nonantum Road shared by Community Rowing, Daly Field and the DCR public boat ramp.

The Issue: Due to heavy traffic on the Mass Pike, vehicles use Nonantum road to transit to and from the western suburbs to Boston.   During high traffic times in the morning and evening, heavy, high speed traffic makes it dangerous to enter and exit this parking lot. At peak morning and evening commuting times, several hundred cars from across Eastern Massachusetts enter and exit the lot each day.  Many of our afternoon and evening participants are middle and high schoolers and as a result we have new drivers navigating through high speed traffic and across a busy bike lane. Minor accidents are a regular occurence, and it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt or worse. The addition of stop signs on the bike lane has not resulted in bikes stopping for crossing traffic.

The Solution:  In order to promote safe and equitable transit through the intersection for all users, we urge you to join the undersigned to support the installation of an actuated traffic light at the entrance to the Daly Field/Community Rowing parking lot.
