San Diego Adjunct Faculty Association started this petition to Jim Mahler

The COVID-19 pandemic has made one thing clear to everyone:
Economic insecurity is the reality for most part-time faculty!

“While it may seem like an odd time to be putting out the “Army of Temps: AFT Contingent Faculty Quality of Worklife Survey,” frankly, it’s about as good a time as ever to show the fragility of this workforce.”  AFT President Randi Weingarten

The AFT report on part-time faculty made abundantly clear the financial issues facing adjunct faculty:

64 percent of contingent faculty reported making less than $50,000 a year;
31 percent of contingent faculty reported making less than $25,000 a year, placing them below federal poverty guidelines for a family of four;
40 percent of contingent households struggle regularly, or during summer and winter breaks, to pay the bills; and
26 percent are at some level of food insecurity.

Given the horrific impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our communities, calls for special assistance for the neediest of our society have been met with broad support. In the case of our unions and community colleges, the most needy employees are our part-time or adjunct faculty who, as is shown so clearly in the Quality of Worklife Survey, are barely surviving during the best of times.

In the spirit of union solidarity and professional unity, SDAFA calls on all San Diego County community college unions and tenured faculty to limit over-load assignments which threaten the very survival of adjunct faculty. Extra classes, which mean a little extra income for tenured faculty, can mean the difference between survival and losing everything for part-time faculty who depend on every class assignment to make a meager living as professional educators.

Please sign this petition to ask our unions and full-time colleagues to refrain from taking over-load assignments during the COCVID-19 crisis in an effort to help out their part-time faculty colleagues and friends.
