I am starting this petition on behalf of the many high school parents who have expressed concern over their children not being able to attend high school.  I am the parent of two sophomores.  I am one of the fortunate parents that can say my sons' grades have not suffered significantly, but there are many others out there that cannot say the same.  Teachers holding 15 minute zoom/team meetings cannot take the place of being in the classroom for 45-50 minutes per class.  These students need the ability to interact with their teachers and peers in order to benefit and succeed academically.

These students also are suffering socially because now there is no face to face interaction, they are hiding behind the screen of an iPad.  Communication skills are declining and the closer these students get to adulthood and entering the workforce, they are not going to have the skills they need to successfully interact with others.

Finally there is the emotional and mental aspect of not being in school.  Many students are used to being involved in extracurricular clubs, activities,  and/or sports.  They are now basically being held prisoner in their own homes which is leading to increased depression or anxiety.  At the end of June 2020, the CDC surveyed Americans on their mental health.  Symptoms of anxiety and depression had increased between March and June 2020 as compared to the same time in 2019 with young people being hit the hardest.

Per the Marshall county data posted 2/2/2021, there have been 2805 total positive/probable cases since the beginning of the pandemic.  Based on a population of just over 30,000 residents, that is 9.35% of the county residents testing positive since the onset of the pandemic.  Of that number 2% have succumbed to the virus.  Currently there are 389 residents isolated at home, 8 residents hospitalized.  That is 1.32% of our county population.

It is extremely frustrating to see high school students within a 40 mile radius  attending school in person in Ohio and Pennsylvania, yet our West Virginia high school students can only attend if their county of residence is not red on the daily WVDHHR map.  I am petitioning for our high school students to be able to attend school in person at least 2 days a week using a hybrid model no matter the color of the county on the daily map.  If K-8 can attend, high schoolers should be permitted as well.
