Demand Congressman Jim Banks attend our Town Hall Meeting

Believing it is the duty of an elected official to periodically inform and consult with constituents in a public forum, the residents of Indiana's Third Congressional District have repeatedly sought a public dialogue with Congressman Jim Banks. In keeping with longstanding democratic tradition, constituents have requested a meeting with Congressman Banks in a 'Town Hall' setting.
Congressman Banks has refused such meetings, instead substituting the time-honored Town Hall with a couple of impromptu appearances where a limited number of constituents could "connect" with him. The "connections" were announced with short notice, set for the middle of the work day in rural locations with limited seating.
The absence of Town Hall forums in the Third Congressional District is unacceptable. Representative Jim Banks is authorized to cast crucial votes on our behalf, and is so obligated to explain his representation and hear our input: That's his job.
Since Rep. Banks has declined to adequately arrange such a meeting, arrangements for a Town Hall were made in his steed: Ample notice was provided for a meeting to occur on Saturday May 13, 10:30-noon, at the auditorium of the Steuben County Community Center. Given the Congressman's previously stated concerns for his safety when engaging with constituents, security will be secured as requested. There was further guarantee that the meeting would be civil in tone.
A detailed invitation was sent to the scheduler for Congressman Banks on April 20. The invitation was declined on April 24 due to a "personal commitment". That refusal was answered with a reminder that Congressman Banks' constituents are frequently forced to adjust schedules when personal plans conflict with professional demands, and no less is expected from our Representative. There has been no further communication.
We, the undersigned, are constituents of Congressman Jim Banks in Indiana's Third Congressional District. We insist that Representative Banks fulfill the obligations of his elected office and attend the scheduled Town Hall meeting on May 13.
