"Styrofoam" (polystyrene foam) is a hazardous substance that:
• leaches into foods and drinks and has been linked to cancer, kidney and liver problems
• adds to landfill crowding and litter problems
• is toxic to produce and contributes to ozone
• crumbles, but never decomposes, and gets into waterways, fish and sea animals
Many restaurants and food stores in Athens still use styrofoam. Our CCSD schools use it regularly for food trays where it has contact with children's and teacher's food and then is added to the trash.
