Jersey City's new short-term-rental law hurts and criminalizes hard-working residents who responsibly and legally earn extra money by home-sharing with AirBNB.  The Jersey City Mayor and City Council must craft a smarter ordinance that will balance the legitimate quality of life issues caused by illegal AirBNB activity while also continuing to provide opportunities for responsible residents to earn income with AirBNB.

Earning extra income from AirBNB has been a safety net that has sustained my family of four during our most vulnerable moments -- after the Great Recession of 2009, when our home was flood-damaged after Hurricane Sandy in 2012, during my breast cancer health crisis in 2016 and last year when the city abruptly tripled our property taxes.

But the Mayor's new AirBNB law would restrict my ability and that of my neighbors citywide from having the same safety net I had during vulnerable moments or even to build a nest egg for retirement, a child's education or to travel.

I recently shared my family’s story in a NYTimes article and on ABC TV to shine light on individual AirBNB hosts like us whose voices were muted in the battle raging in Jersey City between AirBNB and The Hotel lobby.

My husband and I have been responsible AirBNB hosts since 2009 at our small, 2-family "starter home."  We’ve since moved just a 10-minute walk away to a Jersey City condo to accommodate our growing family. In those 10 years, we've responsibly hosted almost 400 stays, received zero citations for noise or trash, maintain and clean the property daily and have only had two incidences when we had to evict problematic guests.  We get mostly 5-star reviews and keep our home immaculate as we intend to save it as an inheritance for our two children.

We support and represent the responsible, entrepreneurial community of small AirBNB hosts all over Jersey City whose stories were suppressed in the anti-AirBNB TV commercials, mailings and internet ads..   And though we and the majority of residents agree regulations are needed to target irresponsible outside operators of large, illegal AirBNB “hotels”, the Mayor’s new AirBNB ordinance sweeps law-abiding host families like ours into the dragnet.

With the passage of the new AirBNB law on November 5th, everyday Jersey City residents have lost a vital opportunity to earn extra income using AirBNB.   In less than 2 months, the livelihood of responsible, hardworking JC residents to serve as hosts will be considered illegal.  And the AirBNB income these hosts earn for their families along with the local businesses that benefit from tourist revenue will be devastated.

In today’s volatile economy, Jersey City residents need MORE opportunities to earn extra income, not less.

Mayor Fulop, you have the power to stop the devastation to the livelihoods of responsible, hard-working Jersey City residents.  Use your authority to create carveouts and provisions that will allow residents to responsibly earn income via AirBNB while also improving the quality of life for our communities.
