In McNair Academic High school, there are only two classes that reflect the history and culture of the Black community, especially that of the students in said school. These courses include: African-American Studies as well as African-American Literature and they are both simply electives. It has come to the surface that, the district has plans to increase classroom size and in doing so, electives such as these will be cut from the curriculum. The issue is that without these classes, black students in McNair will assume that their history consists only of chattel slavery and a minimum of the members involved in the civil rights movement. The purpose of this petition is to show that cutting these electives is the masking of a history that is important not only to the students at McNair Academic High school, but also to the residents of the community.
