Sign California's Plastic Bag Ban
This petition made change with 2,241 supporters!
California Legislature made history in late August by passing the first statewide plastic checkout bag ban in the United States. It is not official until Governor Brown signs it into law so we need to let him know how important this bill is. Please sign this petition then call his office at (916) 445-2841 to say 'Please sign SB 270, the plastic bag bill.'
To: Jerry Brown, California Governor
Plastic litter and pollution is turning into a global epidemic with urban blight, impacts to wildlife and plastic outweighing plankton in many parts of the ocean. California can take a huge step forward when you sign into law SB 270, the checkout bag bill. This bill would put an end to the growing patchwork of ordinances throughout California and create a uniform policy across city and county lines.
Plastic bags are just the tip of the plastic pollution iceberg but plastic bags are typically a top-ten littered item that has a solution with reusable bags. Plastic bag bans are not going to magically make the plastic garbage patches in the ocean disappear but SB 270 will start to address the problem statewide and make people aware that plastic litter is a critical issue.
SB 270 includes a ten-cent fee on paper bags as the incentive for people to remember their reusable bags. For environmental groups, the goal is to have everyone remember their bags and many groups will continue to host bag giveaways. This is an important shift from disposable items to more sustainable items.
Governor Brown, we urge you to sign SB 270 into law.
