My name is Amanda and I am healthcare referral coordinator in California and am also the wife of a type 1 diabetic. Recently my husband was diagnosed with a diabetic foot ulcer that kept him out of work for 2 months. Diabetic ulcers are incredibly dangerous and can result in amputations and infections- if untreated the infection can potentionally result in loss of life. This could have kept him out much longer or had a much more severe outcome had we not had private insurance, unlike those on state funded Medi-Cal. I have come across too many referrals for diabetic Medi-Cal patients needing Podiatry services, for issues such as diabetic ulcers, who have little to ZERO options for outpatient care. This is an insurance issue, not a provider issue. It breaks my heart to see this as I know first hand what this disease can do to a loved one. As it stands, the only Podiatry services available to a Medi-Cal diabetic patient are state funded health care clinics, often in rural areas, that only accept their own internal patients. These services are only provided if deemed “medically necessary to avoid hospitalization”. These clinics are not easily accessible. This needs to end. Why would we not want to be proactive and catch these issues early so patients don’t have to suffer until the problem is so bad hospitalization is the only option? I am begging Govenor Brown to reconsider adding Podiatry services to Medi-Cal benefits. Diabetic patients should be able to see a Podiatrist, should an ulcer occur, in an outpatient setting and be entitled to a minimum 1 annual diabetic foot check. Please sign this petition to help raise awareness and get the word out to Govenor Brown. Our communities not only need but deserve better access for diabetic services, we will no longer allow this suffering to continue for our diabetic loved ones.
