What I am proposing is a tax break for grocery stores and restaurants who choose to install “community fridges” to make their leftover or expired, but not spoiled, food available to those who do not have the ability to provide for themselves or their families for free or at a discounted rate. This is a step towards not only helping the homeless population but decreasing the American people’s contribution to worldwide food waste. One in six people in the US goes hungry daily while 40% of our food is thrown out.  I propose that this idea be piloted in one large city in the state before being implemented statewide in order to assure that it would be positively impactful.
