This is such an easy fix.  In fact, few other companies the use practically identical packaging reinforce their lids with plastic.... so why does Haagen-Dazs?  And why let them continue?  It would be so easy to just make the whole container out of the paperboard material, lid included.  Second step would be to find a durable recyclable material for the entire container.  But first things first. Let's get rid of that notorious maroon ring (or gold, or black, as the flavor dictates), and then go from there.  Haagen-Dazs will get a press boost for "doing the right thing", additionally, so it's really a win-win.
