Pay student nurses for the work they do

0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!

This year the Government withdrew the bursary they pay students on Nursing and other allied care courses. The government also stopped paying school fees for this group of students. What the government did not withdraw however is the requirement that those of us studying these courses will have to put in 1000 hours of work based placement each year. These placements are unpaid. We are required to work day or night and even on bank holidays.

This means that like other students we will finish our courses tens of thousands of pounds in debt. Unlike other students however we will not be able to work during holidays since we would be in our places of placement trying to make up those 1000 hours. The average person on 37.5 hours a week will work for 27 weeks to achieve that. The situation is exacerbated if like me you have got a family.

Nobody wants to go into hospitals. When people do go however it is those of us that have trained as Nurses, as ODPs and other allied health professional that become their champion, looking after them and advocating on their behalf. Right now as student nurses, ODP’s and other health care professionals we do not have any champion. That’s why I am asking you today to become our champion. Join me in asking the government to restore our bursary and fees or failing that pay us for the work we do. Fair is fair.
