Refurbish and Reopen Bootham Park Hospital & Fully Reinstate all Services

We the Undersigned:
- understanding that York has been a centre of excellence for mental health care for well over 200 years
- deploring the chronic lack of services at the moment throughout the mental health sector
- understanding that from having 3 public mental hospitals in 1987, York now has none following the closure of Bootham Park.
Resolve that the government should ensure that the people of York have an acute treatment centre for severely mentally ill. The short term solution is to IMMEDIATELY fund a refurbishment programme for Bootham Park rather than leaving it closed.
Severely sick patients do not want to travel to Leeds, or Hull, anywhere further afield. Family members can not afford to travel to visit them, endangering their care as there is less accountability.
When the hospital closed around 20 or so of the most vulnerable mental health patients were either released without adequate care, transferred to inappropriate locations, or to places not specialised to treat them. This is a travesty and an outrage, and it should not have been allowed to happen.
Mental health care services in York have already been cut to the bone, now the suggestion is to make sure that there are none.
Please provide the funds necessary to refurbish the hospital, and start an extensive works programme rather than replacing it with makeshift units. Adequate adult mental health care across the Vale of York needs to be fully reinstated, and further closures of mental health units and beds prevented.
