Benjamin Dawson started this petition to Jeremy Corbyn (Leader of Labour Party) and

Theatre workers (who are freelancers) have finally been given the go to start work again in a socially distanced manner over the Christmas period.

Theatre is such a big part of people’s lives, especially over the Christmas period. This is when most pantomimes are on. Pantomimes are very important as this is (more often than not) children’s first introduction to live performance and can inspire children to start it as a hobbie or to try it as a chosen career path.

Even though we can’t tell if theatres will be able to open at Christmas yet, companies and casts should be able to carry on rehearsing in a safe manner until the government know that performances definitely can’t go ahead. Performances not going ahead is the last option as we want to get performers and artists back on stage as soon as possible!

Even if performances can’t start this winter season, rehearsals are a good source of income for freelancers who have been out of work and under financial struggle for months. If the government decides against rehearsals being able to go ahead, the government should lay out a clear path and furlough scheme for Theatre workers.

Although the Government may decide against allowing rehearsals to happen, they need to let theatre companies know as soon as possible as so many people are relying on this work and income at Christmas!

Theatre is so important as it’s part of this country’s culture and is a form of escapism for the public, which generally improves mental health. Pantomines give young aspiring actors a chance to gain a professional credit and make there way into the industry.

The Government NEEDS to support theatre and freelancers before it’s too little too late.

Thank You

Ben Dawson
