As a young person I grew up in a largely single parent household and child support payments allowed my family to afford the basics: textbooks, excursions and healthier food. Without these basics I wouldnt be where I am today.
That's why it is so disappointing to me that although Jan 1st has seen a number of welcome budget changes coming into effect, it also marks the beginning of the Governments harsh decision to stop parenting payment at age 8 and in the process push 84,000 single mums off parenting payments and on to a lower payment, Newstart (unemployment payments) as part of a budget cut.
Newstart is far too little to live on, especially when you've got a little kid at home.
When asked if she could live off Newstart, Jenny Macklin, the Minister responsible for this budget cut, said "I could".
So lets ask her to prove it! One week, $35 a day. Prove it. Senator Rachel Siewart already has (check out her story in the video above).
