Overturn Decision to Eliminate Class Ranking

This petition had 1,200 supporters

Recently, the Lockport Township High School (district 205) school board voted to eliminate class ranking starting with next year's incoming freshman (class of 2022). While the school administration notified parents of students that are currently enrolled at the high school via a flyer at parent teacher conferences, the public and those parents of students affected by the new policy were not given adequate notice of their intention to eliminate class ranking. Furthermore, any opposition from parents/the community was downplayed and dismissed/not taken seriously.

Class ranking is important, and allows students who have achieved high academic success to be recognize by their peers and the community. It is also one of the many ways in which colleges and universities help judge a student’s academic performance. Class ranking is also a way to honor the top students (valedictorian and salutatorian), much the same way athletics honors their top performers.

Lockport Township High School was not forthcoming or transparent about their decision to eliminate ranking. They did not give notice to those who would be affected by the rule. The vote should be overturned immediately and a publicized hearing and town hall should be scheduled to allow community members and those who would be affected to voice their concerns.

Please tell district 205 that honoring and publicly recognizing valedictorians and salutatorians is very important!
