Jeffrey Xue and Arjun Dwivedi started this petition to Food Service Department in Brockport

The Food Service Department of the Brockport Central School District throws away copious amounts of food ever day through poor planning and an unwillingness to allow any outside organization to salvage the leftover food. The current policy the Food Service Department is that food may only be heated or reheated twice. For instance, the unserved ground beef used to make Tacos will be frozen. Then whenever the meat is needed, it will be thawed, reheated and reserved for a second time. After the food is reheated a second time, the unserved remains are thrown out. As demonstrated in a National Study, on average $12,000 dollars worth of food is thrown away by every school in America per year (foodtank.com). This figure is atrocious as over 12,000,000 students every day in the United States are food insecure (meaning that they don’t know where their next meal is coming from) (Nokidhungry.org). We need to stop these monstrosities from occurring any further.

Over the past school year, we have been trying to remedy this situation by raising awareness and collecting the uneaten food from the Students in A.D. Oliver Middle School. Over the past few weeks alone, we have gathered over 100 pounds of fresh fruit which we have given to students, teachers, and the Brockport Food Shelf. We've successfully fundraised for a cart to help us wheel the fruit to these different locations.

Therefore, since we have had so much success collecting and saving food, we as the student body would like to expand our operations to packaging the unused food from the Brockport Food Service Department. We need your help by signing the petition to persuade the Food Service Department to implement this new process in saving food. Our goal is to take the unused food and package it into reusable containers. We already have a commitment for getting a refrigerator for this purpose, which will allow us to keep the food at a safe temperature before sending it home with students at the end of each day.

Please help us by signing this petition to minimize food waste in our school and help feed hungry kids across Brockport.
