As the state epidemiologist, Dr. Benjamin Chan carries the responsibility of handling public health matters to the best interest of the public. However, Dr. Chan has clearly shown that the best interest of the public is not one he personally upholds.
State Representative Mindi Messmer, D-Rye, was the first to call for Dr. Chan's resignation.*
To question the need for medical monitoring for those who have been exposed to levels of PFOA 12.5 times higher than the EPA’s provisional health advisory* shows that Dr. Chan does not exhibit the level of concern that one in a position such as he should.
Dr. Chan has made statements claiming “we don’t know if PFCs cause any health effects for humans.”** Which wrongfully greatly minimizes the landmark 60,000-person epidemiological health study for people exposed to PFCs in West Virginia. A study that Task Force Chairman Tom Sherman called “one of the largest and most complete and almost the only of its kind focusing on a single compound in a single population.”*
This study concluded probable links between PFCs and thyroid disease, high cholesterol, testicular and kidney cancer, and pregnancy induced hypertension.***
To say that routine blood tests are unnecessary is not only blatant misrepresentation of established data, but an insult to the community that Dr. Chan has taken a duty to keep healthy and well-informed.
