My boyfriend and I are homeowners in Hazel Park, Michigan. Hazel Park is a small city just North of Detroit's Historic Eight Mile Road. We believe Hazel Park is the ideal location for a used bookstore and all ages event space. We are interested in 21122 John R. Road as our location for, "The Merlin". The building is located directly on John R. We envision a more walkable community. Our house is located two blocks from the desired building. We aim to walk to work and encourage more foot traffic in Hazel Park! Engaging/ interacting with the community that we live in by slinging books and creating a place where all ages of people can enjoy music / dance / art / poetry / comedy, etc !? The building is zoned for both commercial and residential purposes. We are concerned with the lack of affordable housing and intend to rent the two apartments above our store for a fair price. Each apartment is a one bedroom and utilities will be included. Rather than the one bedroom listings found on the internet for amounts like $850+ (in not such nice neighborhoods and landlords that do not care about their tenants nor overall maintenance of the properties), we intend to offer both apartments for $650.

Our business will be called, "The Merlin". Many know Merlin as the wizard from Arthurian legends and medieval Welsh poetry, however for me, Merlin is much more sentimental. He was my mother's favorite literary character. Books like TH White's, "The Once and Future King" and Mark Twain's, "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" were early favorites of hers. My mother passed away unexpectedly four years ago. Both of my parents were bookworms. I fell in love with reading and writing as soon as I was introduced. If not for book stores and libraries... I believe reading has always been one of my healthiest habits. We want to encourage our community to read more. Other ideas/ community offers will be things like: a community darkroom, studio spaces, book trading (for store credit), murals, hosting workshops gallery space, gardening and farming every bit of the property we can, soup kitchen hours, community movie nights, library like system for film rentals/requests, clothing swap or clothing closet, and connecting with other local agencies who, "work to uphold every individual’s right to health and well-being and their competence to participate in the public policy dialogue." (http://harmreduction.org/about-us/mission/) I have concerns about literacy rates and abilities. I have been a teacher/ teacher's assistant, involved in D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read), and would be more than willing to also host beginner's reading groups (REMEMBER ALL AGES:) !!

Please help us get started! The Merlin would be an asset to the Hazel Park community. My guy has been a roofer, fencer, and is now a painter. We can do everything necessary to get this building up to code and serve the community in a positive way, simultaneously.
