Concrete Safety barrier/Guardrail and Flashing Flood Warning Lights on Panzier Lane
Concrete Safety barrier/Guardrail and Flashing Flood Warning Lights on Panzier Lane
On July 17th, 2021 my sister Shelby Mitchell was swept from the roadway of Panzier Lane into Rayse Creek. Her car was found in waters that ranged from 16-19 feet. Shelby’s car was at-least 100 yards from the roadway. She was swept into an open area and forced down the creek. Fast moving current, lack of a current divers in the county, and disappointing performance from our local law enforcement forced the retrieval of her body to be delayed over 31 hours. We cannot prove without doubt that a guardrail or safety barrier would have kept her from the creek but we can hope that a modification to this roadway will save future vehicles from ending up in this creek due to high water, ice/snow, or objects in the road. We do not want to see another family beg in desperation for the rescue or retrieval of their loved one when a simple safety barrier could prevent an issue altogether. We do not believe flashing flood warning lights will be enough. Depending on rainfall amounts the water could cover differing distances and you cannot possibly predict a location where these lights would be best seen in all situations. Shelby made a 911 call that claimed she hit “something”. She did not realize this was water until it had swept her away and a barrier could have stopped her vehicle. Those who live in the area have asked our board members to correct the issue before and their pleas have been overlooked. Surveyors and engineers have stated that this can be completed and we believe money should not hinder the process. We should not have to file a law suit or fundraise for public safety issues. We also should not have more taxes taken out of our paychecks for issues that should be handled with what we already contribute. Please stand with our family and help us to pressure the Jefferson County Board into making the right decision.
One death is enough.
Thank you for your time and support.
