Worldwide call to end the separation of families who seek asylum in the United States

Sign this petition to send a message to Trump and his Administration that the separation of children from their parents as they desperately seek asylum NEEDS TO STOP IMMEDIATELY in the United States.  The world is watching in horror and globally we need to send a message to Trump and demand improved human rights treatment of these families.

President Trump has responded to criticisms of family separation by claiming that a “Democratic law” requires him to do it, and that if Congress doesn’t like it, they can change the law. This is not true. There is no law that requires immigrant families to be separated. The decision to charge everyone crossing the border with illegal entry — and the decision to charge asylum seekers in criminal court rather than waiting to see if they qualify for asylum — are both decisions the Trump administration has made.

Dozens of parents are being split from their children each day — the children labeled “unaccompanied minors” and sent to government custody or foster care, the parents labeled criminals and sent to jail.  Children are subsequently temporarily kept in cages, or in an empty Walmart building while they are processed. There is no system to reunite these children with their parents.

Between October 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018, at least 2,700 children have been split from their parents. 1,995 of them were separated over the last six weeks of that window — April 18 to May 31 — indicating that at present, an average of 45 children are being taken from their parents each day.

To many critics of the Trump administration, family separation is an unpardonable atrocity. Articles depict children crying themselves to sleep because they don’t know where their parents are; one Honduran man killed himself in a detention cell after his child was taken from him.

Help send the message that this is not an acceptable practice or system of dealing with asylum seekers. Help these families become reunited. Sign this petition today!
