Brandy Lemmon started this petition to Senator Jeff Merkley and

Me and my Boyfriend both have Multiple Sclerosis.  He is on SSI and i am on SSD.  but we found out,  we Can get married,  but we are NOT ALLOWED to live together as a married couple.  This is absolute discrimination. If we lived together,  he would lose his income and health benefits. The income cap has NOT been changed since the 70's! We are talking nearly 40 to 50 years ago!  The cap needs to be updated to todays standards. Just because we are both disabled,  we basicly do not have the right to live together,  start a family,  or genuinely be happy.  It seems as though the government just wants us to die alone and take our stuff when we die.  Its a 'hurry up and die alone' kind of stance.  This is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE  and is pure discrimination. Now that the united states have given rights to get married to different sexes, races,  religions and anything else,  the last group that DESERVES these rights is the disabled community.  We have to choose between basicly just dating for ever,  or getting our true happiness with each other  and one of us losing our health insurance and income, this is just plain not right.  We should be able to live together,  have a happy family,  and live happily ever after just like any regular american!  But the government will not allow us to do the one thing we both desperatly want,  simply because we were unfortunate enough to get diagnosed with an incurable disorder. This goes for those with ALS,  Parkinsons, or any other disorder that we did NOT ask for.  But are fighting every day.  All we want is to be happy.  It is hard enough to find true love when you have serious health issues. But to find true love in another person with the same disability,  that is rare.  And such an amazing relationship when your significant other completely understands the struggles you go through.

All we want is the same happiness as any other couple. But because we both are disabled,  we are NOT allowed this freedom!  This needs to be changed NOW!
