At the University of California, Santa Barbara, the recreation center is subpar compared to other Universities of similar statures. In terms of weightlifting areas, UC Davis, UCLA, and Cal Poly SLO all have much larger facilities. All three of these Universities have similar enrollment to UCSB, however the students have far more access to better resources and safer workout areas. The hours from 4-8pm in these areas at UCSB are packed, making it an extreme safety hazard for all weightlifters despite using the proper safety lifting precautions.

On top of this, during the weekdays there are weightlifting classes which block off one third of weightlifting areas, forcing students to work out in a crammed facility. There are only a few hours of the day where a student can have an uninterrupted workout, however these hours are typically inconvenient as most students have class in the morning and must reserve late evening time for homework.

To solve this problem, as you may have guessed, we need more weightlifting areas. The Recreation Department has made improvements over the years; there was an expansion in 2005 and they recently added new equipment to one of the weightlifting areas. With this knowledge, it is apparent that the University has the funds, are willing to develop the Recreation Center, and that they care about the well-being of their students.

There is a plot of land directly north of the Pavilion center and south of Mesa Rd. which would be the perfect place to expand the Recreation Center by implementing a new weightlifting/cardio area. This placement would create an isolation from the other two weightlifting areas, which are already isolated in itself. This would allow for three areas, freeing up space and dwindle the influx of traffic in the all so popular Recreation Center. By signing this petition, we can prove that this is an essential need to the University and all students alike.
