Bring Amazon to the Burnham Lakefront

Since the closure of Michael Reese hospital, the Burnham Lakefront site, between McCormick Place and Bronzeville, has languished. This site, along Chicago’s beautiful lakefront, has the potential to house another architectural gem, extending the development of the lakefront south of downtown. Transportation access to the site is excellent, especially mass transit resources of the CTA and Metra. The site also has easy access to Chicago’s expressway system. The propsed Amazon development is projected to bring as many as 50,000 jobs to Chicago. The population south of this site, especially south of Bronzeville, has historically been crippled by the lack of sufficient jobs. This under-employed population extends from Kenwood, through Hyde Park, South Shore, and South Chicago. Although Amazon is said to be seeking substantial concessions from the selected city, it has not specified the concessions sought. Chicago in its entirety would be significantly enhanced through infrastructure improvements that would also benefit Amazon. Also, this development would serve as a bridge between downtown and the Obama Presidential Library.
