Outside of fossil-fuel industries, Amazon is among the least sustainable companies in the United States of America. But it is also the most profitable company in our country and by many measures the entire world.

Amazon's contributions to our current climate emergency have caused a lot of controversy for them already. So much, that Amazon has bought cleaner fuel for their privately owned airplanes and even decided to name the new stadium they're building in Seattle the Climate Pledge Arena. The problem with these steps is that, while they make for good publicity, they do nothing to tackle Amazon's #1 contribution to the environment: their shipping practices.

In order for consumers to buy products through Amazon without feeling as if they're doing more harm to the environment than if they'd just driven between stores to find the products they need, Amazon needs to begin polluting less by doing the following:

  • Provide plastic-free shipping options for their products
  • Reduce the use of plastics at their own factories and shipping facilities.
  • Clearly label which third party merchants do not provide plastic-free shipping options.

All of these would help Amazon to set an example (if not an industry standard) to online retail centers. This would even be all to their financial benefit; the same consumers who are responsible for replacing traditional in-person retail stores with services like Amazon (youths) are also the largest demographic demanding more sustainable products.

Let Amazon know that you're a potential customer that can't buy from them until they do the three steps outlined above. Sign and join the fight for Earth!
