Don't Waive the Jones Act For Puerto Rico...REPEAL It
This petition had 121 supporters
Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria, and relief efforts are difficult. Contrary to many news accounts the #JonesAct is not responsible for the relief difficulties facing the island. The problems are with distribution (insufficient trucks and truck drivers; impassible or washed out roads, etc.), not vessel availability.
However, the Jones Act is greatly responsible for the island's years-long dire economic condition. Everything that Puerto Rico imports is more expensive than it ought to be, because of the Jones Act. It is a century-old law that has far outlived its usefulness.
Puerto Rico's poverty rate is TWICE that of the poorest US state (think about that fact for a moment...). There is no legitimate reason for the Jones Act to continue to apply to - and continue to harm - Puerto Rico, home to 3.5 million of our fellow Americans. It needs to be repealed with respect to Puerto Rico immediately.
