Please overturn the ban on tail-in parking along North Steyne from Raglan Street to Collingwood Street in Manly

This petition was started under the direction of the Manly Surfer's Action Group [MSAG] in response to the sudden and unannounced ban on tail-in parking along North Steyne. In the opinion of the majority of the council of MSAG, this places all members of the local and visitor communities using the parking facilities along North Steyne, in positions of agreigious, unacceptable and needless risk. Signing this petition will raise the gravity of the exposure to risk and ensure that urgent attention is dedicated to reversing the ban by Manly Council.

The recent ban and commencement of infringment fining for tail-in parking on the Ocean side along of North Steyne was executed without any obvious consultation with stakeholders from the local community and risks the safety of all users of the parking facilities and surrounding road and beach-side recreational areas - particularly vulnerable, young children.

The option of tail-in parking to assist in safely retrieving bikes, pushchairs and surfboards from the rear of a car, wagon, ute or van is now removed. Vulnerable users such as families with young children must now retrieve this equipment into the traffic headed South along North Steyne and risk serious injury or worse.

The strip from Pine Lane to Carlton Street is very popular with surfers, many of whom have boards 9 foot and above. Retrieving these from the rear of a van, ute or wagon must now be managed well into the traffic headed South along North Steyne. This presents an unacceceptable risk to the safety of surfers, drivers of vehicles and their passengers and cyclists who adopt the choice to ride on the public road instead of the so called "shared path" on the other side of the parking bays.

Many cars entering parking bays front-side from the Southbound lane of North Steyne, particularly along the relatively narrow stretch from Pine Streert to Carlton Street, will now either cross into the oncomng Northbound lane or perform a progression of forward and reverse manouevers to ensure that their entry into the parking bays can be executed safely when considering other cars already parked.

Cars parked immediately next to vans and high-sided utes will lose the valuable additional views of the traffic headed South along North Steyne when exiting parking bays in reverse: essentially blind to traffic headed South [currently where the adjacent high-sided vehicle is parked tail-in cars have a better chance to see South-bound traffic.
