Stop the demolition of the Jackson District Library Admin building

The Jackson District Library Board of Trustees will be voting on the demolition of the historic, Jackson library administration building to make room for a parking structure for the Commonwealth Associates and downtown Jackson. The Administration building (ca.1920 ) was constructed as doctor offices. Clearly, it was erected after the Carnegie Library, but it has been adjacent to it for so long that it has become part of the setting of the library. This is important since it is on the list of the seven areas of historic significance. The parking structure will be paid for with tax payers dollars that could come from taxes that are designated for schools. That is corporate welfare for Commonwealth Associates. Instead of a parking deck, employers should provide incentives to live downtown. Midtown in Detroit did this by offering loans for home purchases and rehabs. Us taxpayers are still paying off the $30M bond debt owed for the last two parking decks for CMS Energy. Us taxpayers pay $500K a year to subsidize the two parking ramps. With plenty of other options available for placement in the surrounding area and plenty of surface parking available, there is not an actual need for another parking structure. There needs to be an end to the corporate welfare in the City of Jackson. No more handouts to particular corporations and industries simply because our City is desperate for growth downtown. No more specialized tax breaks. No more exemptions or special treatment. No more crony capitalism. City Manager Patrick Burtch crafted this development deal behind closed doors - again - and now he is trying to rush it through with no public input. This is a "rush" job by the City to push their agenda of downtown redevelopment. It does not benefit all us citizens.

We desperately need a "ground swell" of citizens to speak against this at the meeting. If you are unable to attend you can e-mail your opposition letter to: JDL Director, Sara Schneider Tackett: .
