Jamie Martin started this petition to JCQ

At present, transgender youth that are taking exams are not allowed to sit the exam as their gender, and must instead have their birth sex, not gender, on certificates. As well as this, JCQ (the coordinators of exam boards) require that transgender youth must also go by their birth sex, not their actual gender, in school registers, claiming ‘identity fraud’ as the reason behind this. This is a problem as it completely invalidates the transitions of transgender people, and forces them to identify as something that they are clearly not, which causes extreme dysphoria. According to Stonewall, 27% of trans young people have attempted suicide, making this a matter of life and death for the most vulnerable trans folk.

However, this doesn’t have to be the case. There are many other forms of identification than a person’s birth sex: their name, middle names, previous exam results, simply checking with the trans person themselves, or their school, that they have got the right person- leaving their gender identity alone. JCQ have the power to change this. With enough pressure put on them, we can show them that their treatment of trans young people, to whom Gender Recognition Act certificates are inaccessible, is not okay. That we do not condone this. If we win, it will be a landmark statement to the country as a whole: our trans youth are worth more than this. We stand with them. If we lose, this atrocious treatment of trans youth continues, and we risk both the lives and the mental stability of countless trans youth across the country. We cannot lose.

As a 17-year-old transgender male, I know firsthand what is at stake. But us trans youth can’t do this on our own. We need you to help create change, to sign and share this petition, to show JCQ that what they are doing is not okay. A mass email to JCQ is also in the works: if interested, please email martinjamie310@gmail.com for more information, and a template email.
