Stop the Atherton Quarry, Save Sugar Creek!

Stop the Atherton Quarry, Save Sugar Creek!
There is a quarry being planned on Courtney Atherton Rd. here in Sugar Creek, Missouri. Central Plains Cement is attempting to pursue a change in zoning which would allow them to operate an open pit mine within city limits. Quarries are extremely destructive to the environment, in fact, this quarry would be located only a couple of miles from our beautiful LaBenite Park and the Liberty Bend Conservation Area which would not provide a sufficient buffer zone to protect these wildlife preservation sites including the Missouri River. An existing quarry in our area has already filed for expansion in 2019 which has subsequently led to widespread destruction in southern Jackson County. We can not let our town suffer the same fate.
Opening a quarry this close to Sugar Creek will do incalculable damage to the residential property value in our town. Dust from open blast mining will destroy our air quality and contribute to invasive noise pollution which will negatively impact residents and local wildlife for years to come. Commercial trucks hauling tons of mined material will wreck our roads and kill local commerce.
Please stand with us and help prevent this quarry from coming and ruining this historic town loved by so many.
