STUDENTS APPEAL TO KEEP INTERNATIONALLY BEST-SELLING AUTHOR ADAM DAVIES AT UCO
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500.
University of Central Oklahoma students are going to quietly receive an increase to their tuition of 10%. While this is happening, students are at risk of losing beloved professors.
The Oklahoma educational system received a 52% budget cut for the year 2017, which has adversely affected elementary, high school, and college students around the state.
Because of the state's budget cuts affecting UCO, the university has not moved to retain our highly appreciated, knowledgeable, and award-winning professor, Adam Davies. He has been instrumental in helping countless students find their writing voice, honing their craft, and personally impacting their lives.
Without inspirational professors such as Mr. Davies, our education suffers from not having passionate and knowledgeable professionals. Currently, Davies is an artist-in-residence, which is a position that is rotated annually, but has been held by him for three years. What does this say about his character as a professor? Students in the past have petitioned to keep him in the position for another year. Now we, the current students, are petitioning for a more permanent position.
Adam Davies is dedicated to the University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma City's education, and each student he encounters. Penguin-Random House has published three of his novels. Currently, his play, The Bathrobe Club, is being considered for production by two very prestigious Off-Broadway theatres: The Actors' Company Theatre and Cherry Lane Theatre. He has also obtained an MFA from Syracuse University in New York, a top-five program, but despite his extensive experience, qualifications, and world-wide renown, he is not being considered for a permanent position at the University of Central Oklahoma. Adam Davies, instead of returning to New York City, chooses to stay here to build up Oklahoma writers. He says, "I would love to commit my life to UCO."
We are asking you to understand the gravity of the situation. Students' lives have been transformed by one individual. Numerous students can testify to how impactful Davies has been to the students at UCO as a professor and a mentor. Please sign the petition and help us notify the university's administration of our plight.
We understand that the university has limited funds, budget cuts, and no permanent positions available at this time. Short of a permanent position, we appeal to keep Adam Davies as the artist-in-residence for another year until a permanent position is available, if not in the Liberal Arts department, then in the Theatre Arts department.
Please sign this petition if you support strong education in Oklahoma.
