Repeal the Lake Michigan Committee's Equivalent Substitution for Great Lakes Stocking

Sport fishing has become a multi-billion dollar industry along the shores of Lake Michigan. Recent declines in bait fish populations are putting the future of this fishery in jeopardy. To help fight these declines, the Lake Michigan Committee has implemented a steep decline in the stocking of Chinook Salmon. Chinook Salmon are the heaviest feeding fish in the Great Lakes, and feed entirely on alewives for their diet. Under current regulations states are allowed to substitute Chinook reductions with a larger amount of stocking reductions of another species. This rule defeats the purpose of stocking reductions, as these other species rely on different types of bait fish to complete their diets. This petition indents to raise awareness and eliminate the equivalent substitute ratio in hopes of protecting the future of our fishery.
