Here at westside we have a dress code, just like any other school. The idea of a dress code however is patriarchal, and sexualizing underage girls. The student body “breaks” the dress code on a daily basis. Our stomachs are not inappropriate and our shoulders are not suggestive, the administration is making it out to be something inappropriate just by having a dress code they are supporting the idea that a women’s body is not her own.
GenZ is probably one of the most expressive generations so far. We express ourselves through our clothes, and when we are sent home for just dressing freely it can make us feel sexualized and uncomfortable. We, the student body shouldn’t have to appeal to the patriarchal ideas of the dress code on a daily basis; quite frankly it’s offensive to think that the boys at our school can’t control themselves. Just what is it that you’re teaching with this dress code?
We aren’t blaming the administration or the teachers for this, as they’re just adhering to what they’re told. But they are the ones who have the power to abolish the dress code. Our principal jay opperman and administrator, who I believe to be Enid Schonewise. ( if I am wrong and have misidentified them in someway shape or form please tell me)
We have the power to change something; So let’s change it. We don’t have to be drastic and have a whole protest, but a one on one meeting with the principal and the feminist club would be ideal. The club I’m sure would love to create a slideshow or write something to convince the administration otherwise.
The student body, and any other teens make rash decisions based on how they feel (me included) We want to have control as teenagers so we defy what the school wants from us. The freedom to dress how we want is a big deal, to teenagers especially. So respectfully we ask the administration to do the best they can in helping us teenagers express ourselves freely.
