Nathan Stange started this petition to Jay Jacobs and

Jay Jacobs told Newsday (https://www.newsday.com/news/region-state/jay-jacobs-drivers-licenses-immigrants-1.32063237) that the six Democratic Senators of Long Island should not support bills related to Immigrant Rights (A03675/S01747, more info here: https://greenlightnewyork.org/get-to-know-the-issue), Marijuana Legalization (A3506/S3040), and Tenants' Rights (nine bills, described here: https://www.housingjusticeforall.org/our-platform)

He pointed to an inability to explain such votes to Rockville Centre constituents and the fear of Senators being thrown from office as reasons they should not press the issues at this time: “I’m supposed to go into Rockville Centre and tell people ‘We represent you’? They’re going to throw us out of office”

To single out Rockville Centre as incapable of supporting Democratic-led proposals is particularly laughable, since community activists and organizers from RVC were instrumental in the electoral success of Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.

He said he personally supports the progressive proposals, but that elected officials should: “Have a little patience. Go a little slower.” Adding: “Let’s educate the public and try to convince them this is good.”

If Jacobs truly supports the progressive policies as he says, his energy should be spent working with grassroots organizers to educate constituents and build support for the policies, rather than sowing discord and preaching incrementalism.

These times — of Federally supported immigrant abuse, growing white nationalism, widespread mass incarceration and over-policing of communities of color, and rapacious landlords — demand bold leadership with a vision for a more just future. The Democratic Party should break with big fundraising and instead build a broad, multi-racial coalition working for all Long Islanders, regardless of wealth, power or privilege.

We, the undersigned residents of Rockville Centre, strongly disagree that support for driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants, statewide rent control, and marijuana legalization will drain support for our elected officials.

We urge our State Senator (Todd Kaminsky) and Assembly Member (Judy Boyd Griffin) to ignore the advice of Jay Jacobs and support progressive legislation sooner, rather than later.

Respectfully,
