Today women make up only 7% of the federal prison population, yet in the past 30 years the amount of incarcerated women has increased by 700%. You would expect with a huge increase of women that there would be more accommodations made to prison environments, but there have been little to none. This lack of change has lead to problems such as sexual assault, poor treatment of substance abuse, medical complications, and more.

We need to use better substance abuse programs, sexual assault education, and recognition of trauma in prison to help incarcerated women. To learn more, go to
