Teagan Hansen started this petition to Governor Jay Inslee

During World War 2, the residents of Washington put Japanese Americans in an internment camp located in Puyallup’s fairgrounds. There is no memorial on the fairground despite the loss that happened. The Japanese Americans during this time were mistreated in the camp so badly, a lot died. The wood box like homes that they were housed in were not insulated and in Washington’s weather, it was very cold and wet a lot. They were uprooted from their homes and given mostly spoiled food that upset their stomaches that were used to a certain cultural diet.

We need to recognize what happened, and give some sense of closure to the relatives of those who died. Many don’t know what happened, and if they did it would not change the Fairground’s audience or money intake. The Governor, Mr. Jay Inslee, can change this. He can put a plaque or some sort of memorial to show recognition to the people that have died. It’s not to late to fix a problem that shouldn’t have happened. Washington residents of 1939 to 1941 were racist especially to the Japanese and German Americans that probably have never even been to their ethnic homes, we can fix this overlooked problem one step at a time. We need a plaque for recognition, we don’t lose anything if we don’t get the signs.. but if we win, we show that Washington is a good place for everyone. In a time of knowledge, ignorance is a choice.

I am not of japanese or asian decent, but it takes a morally horrible person not to recognize why it’s wrong that this event got no recognition or memorial.
