With the US demand for coal declining, the American coal industry has set its sights on Asian markets, meaning billions of tons of Powder River Basin coal will be shipped through new deepwater ports in the Pacific Northwest.

Each day, over fifty, mile-and-a-half-long trains will travel through small towns on the way to places like Bellingham and Longview, spewing mercury-laden coal dust, causing a myriad of health and environmental issues, causing local traffic problems and the worst of it, that coal will be eventually be burned in Asian coal power plants, accelerating global climate change.

We have to make a decision, do we continue our dependence on an antiquated, coal-dependent energy model, or look ahead and embrace the future of energy, creating jobs, preserving the health of our citizens and avoiding the worst effects of climate change?

The most effective way to do that is to prevent the deepwater ports in Bellingham and Longview from being turned into industrial coal export terminals.

Governor Inslee, we support your history as a true climate champion.  Washington has always been the center of innovation and environmental responsibility.  The health of our citizens, the climate impacts and the opportunity costs aren’t worth Washington being the epicenter of coal exports.

Please stop coal exports in our Pacific Northwest!
