Why this petition matters

Started by Paul Williams

Would you send your child to a school without a library? Would you attend a post secondary institution without a library? If you answered ‘no’ - please consider supporting this petition to save the Alberta Government Library and librarians.

The GoA recently confirmed it will close the Alberta Government Library by end of July in order to save $1.2 million. The AGL holds current and historical government documents including environmental impact assessments dating back to the 1960’s. It also is the only service that provides approximately 29,000 public servants efficient and economical access to libraries, databases and academic journals. Some of the information civil servants need is unique to government and not reliably available elsewhere. Although Alberta is home to excellent academic libraries, there is no partnership that allows government staff to access them. They are dependent on the AGL and AGL librarians. Once AGL closes, staff will lose access to discounted resources and inter-library loan/document delivery services. This closure will make access to knowledge more expensive, not more economical.

Citizens of Alberta deserve an informed public service. In order to be informed, our public servants needs access to information. Alberta’s civil servants rely on the specialized collections and services of the AGL and its dedicated staff to provide the information needed for government staff to make the best decisions for Albertans.

This is a call to the citizens of Alberta.. sign this petition to let our government know that you value information, facts, and research. Let them know you support an informed, knowledge-oriented civil service.

Tell Jason Kenney and the GoA that the library is essential and that they must preserve the library and its librarians.
