The current proposed Alberta economic relaunch is lumping all ‘gyms’ in with large rec centres and box style facilities and including us all in phase 3 of the relaunch.

However, this seems unfair as we are independent small businesses with the capability and flexibility to enforce strict attendance and sanitation protocols. Given the unique style of boutique fitness we have the space and may operate at 50% capacity( or less) to uphold the guidelines and social distancing standards set by AHS.

We are able to keep close records of attendance and provide screening in this CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT. By removing the use of common props and implementing strict policies and procedures between and during class times we may offer a much needed outlet to our communities.

Physical exercise strengthens the immune system and promotes overall health and wellness. In the grand scheme, the intention of lessening the burden on our health care system by closing down all non essential services to flatten the curve, is the same reason why we should be granted permission to reopen sooner rather than later.

Our services offered are a key player in the reduction of depression, anxiety and other by products of the stressors brought forth by the recent pandemic. Together we can play a role in lessening the burden on the limited mental health healthcare resources by allowing connection, community and exercise in a safe and controlled manner. 

We feel Jason Kenney and Alberta Health Services should reconsider the generalization of boutique style studios among “gyms” and allow us to reopen along with movie theatres and tanning salons and other “personal services” in phase 2 of the Alberta economic relaunch.
