Awareness + Justice for Westlake's Dr.Johnsons ECON Students
Dr. Johnson (aka Tanika Johnson), is a great teacher but we believe her teaching techniques are not built for the students who attend Westlake high school. This issue has an occurring impact not only the students but also their grades in the class. Econ is a class that we are required by law to pass in order to graduate high school. Dr. Johnson teaching make it difficult for us as students to understand even comprehended. Her lessons are very long and when asked to review she says no and continue on with her lesson. Her teaching actually falls outside the guidelines of Fulton County Schools Curriculum which states "Practice: Daily assignments, observations, and/or engagement activities given in class or for homework given to students to build and/or remediate skills. Practice has a maximum weight of 10 percent in the grade book." Fulton County also states that Recovery Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the semester. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades. As a whole, the senior class doesn't want Dr. Johnson to be fired, instead we want to be able to have recovery, tutorial, and simply have a chance at passing the class.
