Why this petition matters

Our Seniors need to utilize their largest asset to pay for health care.  If they own rentals or even their primary residence they are subject to the current squatter laws that prohibit them from evicting those they have allowed access to their property.  Additionally the current law puts them in a position to loose that asset.  Our Medicaid and Medicare systems depend on these assets to help mitigate the rising cost of health care to support these programs.  If these at risk adults are unable to mitigate their real estate they may not qualify for the assistance they need.  The trickle down effect this law has on the health care providers, facilities and the conditions in which these Seniors find themselves in is unfair and causes our system to breakdown.  Our Nursing homes are suffering and are unable to keep shouldering the cost associated with the squatter laws that protect renters from paying or becoming homeless.  The trade off for protecting the young is to sacrifice the old.  This is unacceptable!  I propose that with every rental contract the waiver for our Senior Citizens discloses that they are held exempt from the squatter law and renters can choose to take that risk where they will have no recourse but to vacate when asked abiding by current rental eviction laws on the books.  The worst travesty to affect Seniors under this law is when their own children laugh in their faces and literally hold them hostage from exercising their right to use their home to live their lives and support their health care needs.  Often times these family members are drug dealers and refuse to leave and there is zero protection for our Seniors.
